Exploring Vegan skincare, safety and more

Introduction

Have you ever thought about using vegan skincare products? Is it better for your skin? There are two key arguments about vegan skincare that makes it attractive to many. We will discuss both below. First, let’s define vegan skincare and the benefits it offers.

What is vegan skincare?

Vegan skincare products contain plant-based products created without the use of ingredients derived from animals. Vegan skincare today ranges from shampoos to cosmetics. Almost every skincare product you can find today has a vegan counterpart.

Is it all plant-based?

A vegan product does not automatically mean it is all plant-based. Veganism derives from the philosophy of avoiding animal cruelty. In most vegan products, the most common components include ingredients derived from plants. Generally, they do not include substances derived from animals. That means they do not contain common ingredients like honey, beeswax, lanolin, carmine, and others in making the product. Some vegan skincare products are very simple and basic. This includes elements containing coffee and aloe vera. Also, vegan products can contain inorganic ingredients that are not necessarily plant-based.

It is cruelty-free?

All vegan skincare products are cruelty-free, given that the company adheres to the advocacy of Veganism. Still, some products are simply devoid of any animal testing even if they are not vegan. Animal testing is a common practice greatly opposed by vegans. However, using only plant-based ingredients does not necessarily make it animal cruelty-free – they are not the same thing. Some brands may be both cruelty-free and plant-based. Of course, it is best to thoroughly research your products to find out if it includes both.

Are vegan skincare products safe?

Most have this assumption that anything plant-based is safe. However, this is not always the case. Just like anything you put on your skin, there is always a risk that what you put on your skin can cause harm. Some organic substances can cause allergies that lead to skin irritation and inflammation. Furthermore, there is also an assortment of chemicals and compounds, such as acids and alcohols derived from plants. Therefore, as in any product, checking the ingredients is good practice to know which one is right for your skin type.
